My left background assumed technological dynamism, harnessed by institutions and regulations acting in the common good, as the Luddites said making these powers not “hurtful to the commonality”. We need new, more visionary versions of the labour movement. But I accept that opposing data centres creates a pause in which such strategic forces and projects can brew.
